Governor Evans Kidero escapes road accident, proceeds to funds drive

KISII, KENYA: Nairobi County governor Dr Evans Kidero was involved in a road accident at Kegati area, along the Kisii-Sotik road.

Keroka base commander Abraham Ndegwa who arrived at the scene of the accident shortly after the 9.30 am said the Nairobi governor escaped unhurt.

The vehicle Dr Kidero was riding in veered off the road to avoid hitting an oncoming car in his convoy that had slowed to cross over a speed bump while a matatu was also approaching from Kisii .

The Nairobi governor was headed for Homa Bay County where he was to preside over a funds drive in aid of Asumbi Catholic Church.

Despite the Saturday morning misfortune, Kidero proceeded to the function and was later expected to fly back to Nairobi in a chopper.

Nelson Akunga, a witness said the vehicle rolled several times for over 30 metres and overturned.

However Kidero, his driver and security personnel escaped from the Range Rover sport unhurt.

The windscreen was smashed and the wreckage towed to Keroka police station in Nyamira County.

“The bumps are unmarked it was difficult for the driver to control the vehicle without hitting the lead car, a Mercedes Benz, which was too low and was struggling to cross the bump,” he said.

Akunga said that Kidero was taken to a Kisii hospital but left 15 minutes later for his destination in Asumbi nearly 20 kilometres from Kisii town.

Security officers attached to Kisii County governor James Ongwae were among the first people to arrive at the scene and helped Kidero and his contingent out of the overturned vehicle.
