ELDORET, KENYA: Ten passengers are nursing serious injuries in hospital after a bus they were traveling in lost control and overturned in Uasin Gishu County.
The bus identified as 'Da shuttle' which was headed to Moi University's main campus from Eldoret rolled on the road a few kilometers from the Kesses centre.
Confirming the incident, Eldoret Traffic base commandant Humphrey Abai said the driver swerved to avoid hitting a man pushing a wheel barrow across the road.
“Some passengers sustained fracture injuries following the impact but are currently in stable condition,” he said.
Abai noted that the bus lost control after attempts by the driver to control the bus were not successful due to the weight of the bus.
“On board the bus were women headed to the market along with their produce as well as students headed to Moi University for lectures,” he added.
Abai called on drivers to observe traffic rules as a measure to contain constant accidents taking place across the country.
“We are approaching the festive season where most families will want to travel to various parts of the country, it is upon the drivers to observe caution to avoid such incidences,” he said.
He further warned passengers against boarding vehicles that are full to capacity saying that officers will be keen to arrest those found violating the law.
Two students from Moi University were rushed to Moi Teaching and referral hospital while the rest were treated at the institution’s dispensary.
The accident occurred two weeks after a bus bound to Kitale collided with a lorry along Cheptiret- Eldoret highway claiming three lives and injuring others.
The bus tried to overtake a lorry but was edged out after it was hit from the back leading to the accident.
