Jubilee now the Tower of Babel

The Jubilee government is fast becoming another Tower of Babel. The more its owners purport to build it more, the more they get confused and speak in tongues. Could they be on what the French call: “Mission impossible”?

Something about them is not adding up. Jubilee leaders are either cheating Kenyans, deliberately confusing us or just speaking in tongues. Or could it be that strange disease called: “Collective Amnesia”, which one time British High Commissioner to Kenya Sir Edward Clay accused some of our leaders of suffering from, only to be called names and demonised. President Uhuru, his Deputy William Ruto and Radio journalist Joshua Sang are facing crimes against humanity charges at the ICC in The Hague.

The Court’s Prosecutor told the Judges and the World that they were suspected to be the most responsible for the 2007-2008 post-election violence implosion.

Towards the General Election, they bombarded the country with loud pronunciations and accusations that then Prime Minister Raila Odinga was the evil hand behind their woes and had plotted and executed the scheme to block their participation in the elections. The lie was turned it into an anthem of TNA and URP election campaigns, and their unsuspecting sympathisers believed them.

Once in power, they turned their guns on the civil society and foreign, western powers, who they castigated for having conspired to fabricate evidence, hired mercenaries for witnesses and coached them to frame the three.

In that mix, they occasionally found room to continue with the lie that it was Raila.

But now, out of the blues, DP William Ruto, through his lawyers, told ICC his case was a fabrication by senior Government functionaries in the coalition government of former President Kibaki and Raila. But while enumerating their identities, virtually all the senior officers hail from Mr Kibaki’s Mt Kenya region. Suddenly, Raila’s name was missing from the list.

Ironically, President Uhuru was the Crown Prince of the powerful Kibaki wing of the coalition government working together with the people Ruto has told ICC, framed him. Fastforward to 2013, inside Jubilee government and Uhuru inherits these so-called fixers, who framed his political twin brother and co-principal Ruto. Some of them he appointed in his most strategic departments of the Executive, meaning they are his top lieutenants. Who can explain this? What a coincidence! Is Ruto and his URP lieutenants in the Executive and Parliament expected to accept and move on?

Doesn’t it surprise Kenyans that none of the mentioned Government bureaucrats in the alleged Ruto fixing has bothered to hire a lawyer to rush to the The Hague court to clear his name or even locally attempt to argue his innocence, even through the Press? Did they hear their names being mentioned at the ICC? The same names were even mentioned in the newspapers and TV reports.

It was not accidental that URP Senator Charles Keter, a Ruto ally, recently declared war on “these fixers in government”. He told public meetings in his backyard of Kipsigis land that Ruto’s supporters in government and indeed the DP himself, are feeling scandalised and cannot work with “10 fixers” in top government positions who are responsible for the DP’s ICC woes. What is this expected to mean as jubilee coalition mitigates Kenya’s dreams in leadership and development?

Indeed, the more this drama of “kikulacho ki nguoni mwako” escalates, the more Kenyans should appreciate the need for full hearings at The Hague so that the whole truth is known.

Kenyans deserve the truth, just as the victims of poll violence deserve justice. Equally, Uhuru, Ruto and Sang deserve this Hague opportunity to clear their names.

They also need it to expose those who could have framed them. Whoever is advising the two leaders to pursue deferral of their cases is their enemy, probably shielding the real “fixers”.
