Migori County: Migori County government has now done away with zoning by tobacco processing companies in a move aimed at liberalising the market.
County executive member for Agriculture Moses Chamwada said the move had been made to ensure that the farmers were able to take their leaves to whichever company they felt offered better rates.
“We cannot continue forcing our farmers in particular region to only take their leaves to particular companies,” he said.
He made the remarks yesterday during a meeting attended by representatives from all the tobacco processing companies, farmers’ representatives and other leaders from the county. The tobacco firms included British American Tobacco, Mastermind Kenya and Alliance One.
