How to keep personal security amid fears of terror attacks in Kenya

By MBIJIWE MWENDA

Few security measures issued by authorities rarely come with proper information on how to ensure personal security. A terrorism expert gives tips on how to manage personal security.

1) Be prepared all the time:

• Being aware of the threats in the places you are going to.

• Staying alert to the prevailing situation and observing simple precautions.

2) Beware of security risks:

• Before leaving your house, decide on the route you will take.

• Always look out for strangers waiting by your house or office and cars following you and other unusual incidents.

• Avoid any situations where you may become isolated and at risk.

3) Keep a low profile:

• Avoid overt signs of wealth, such as expensive watches, jewelry. Personal equipment such as laptops, cameras and telephones should be carried in bags/backpacks.

• Do not discuss details of your work or itinerary with individuals not known to you.

• Ensure, as much as possible, personal information is properly safeguarded i.e that your details are not published carelessly.

4) Have an unpredictable routine:

• If possible avoid setting a pattern. If you have options vary your routes.

• Be alert at the beginning and end of your journeys.

5) Make sure you communicate:

• Always test your cell phone; keep it fully charged and loaded with airtime.

• Carry a hard copy of your emergency contact details.

6) Keep layers of protection:

• Adopt appropriate security measures and maintain them.

• Acknowledge the dangers associated with creating a routine within normal life

• Always: Be aware. Be prepared. Be safe. Be involved.

• Always remain alert.
