A couple living in Umoja, Nairobi, were attacked by “ghosts” and forced to spend a cold Sunday night outside their house.

The couple claimed the unseen spirits laughed like humans, and had attacked their house several times. They also reportedly meowed like cats.

But on August 23, 1988, the couple escorted a visitor at night, only to return and find the house on fire. Nearly all their belongings were razed to the ground. “The city commission fire brigade arrived soon afterwards. Nobody was injured in the fire. Only a side board and a sofa set was salvaged,” the East African Standard quoted a witness as saying.

Stories of ghosts attacking them started when the napkins that their toddler used during a journey from their rural home in Nyahururu mysteriously disappeared. People said the ghosts at one point visited them early in the day and destroyed their shoes. “It even threw food into a manhole before screaming and taking off,” they said. Later, prayers were performed in the house and the ghosts reportedly vanished. The family then became born again Christians.
