Voi, Kenya: Ten people sustained serious injuries after the bus they were traveling in was involved in a road accident along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway.
Police said the Saturday morning accident occurred at Ndara area near Voi town involved a bus and a trailer.
Ndara area is regarded as one of the major black spots in the country.
Taita-Taveta Police Commander Richard Bitonga told The Standard that 10 passengers were admitted to Voi district hospital with multiple injuries.
He said five accident victims were still admitted to the hospital in critical condition while five others were treated and discharged. Thirty-six other passengers however escaped unscathed said Bitonga.
The police commander said the bus was traveling from Mombasa to Mwingi at the time of the accident.
He said the bus driver was trying to overtake a trailer traveling in the same direction without calculating the distance of the incoming vehicle.
In the process to avoid head on collision, the bus driver swerved back to his lane hence hitting the rear side of the lorry.
The police boss said the bus veered off the road and overturned injuring the passengers.
Bitonga said the driver escaped immediately after the accident and a manhunt for him had been launched.
