Let’s run to the top of the world again

Our national athletics team, which is already in Moscow preparing for the prestigious World Athletics Championships, faces a monumental task in their bid to repeat their Daegu championships fete two years ago.

As usual, Kenyan’s expectations are sky-high and we hope for an even better performance. However, when one critically analyses the level of competence of the current squad, compared to the Daegu team, I am a bit apprehensive. This is simply because of the absence of 800m world record holder David Rudisha. Absence of Pamela Jelimo and Vivian Cheruiyot will also be a big blow as this world conquering athletes are simply irreplaceable!

However, we’ve a battalion of highly talented youths who we hope will rise to the occasion and raise our flag high and win medals - gold, silver and bronze. Our athletes should know that although the competition is stiff, we want nothing but a clean sweep; gold, silver and bronze from 800m to marathon. Anything less, will not be well received by Kenyans.

As our athletes prepare to unleash their potential and confirm to the world that Kenya is an indomitable superpower in athletics, they nonetheless must keep an eye on our arch and perennial rivals - enemy number one, Ethiopia.

In previous World Championships, Olympics and other international athletics competitions, the sly Ethiopians have had a bizarre ‘tradition’ of running behind our athletes to make them weary mentally and physically. Now is the time to turn the heat against them.
