Labour Cabinet Secretary Kazungu Kambi has confirmed plans are underway to release teachers’ July salaries.

Though there was no specific date on when the salaries would be paid out, Kambi said it had already been approved and would soon be in teachers’ individual bank accounts.

“The salaries will be paid as agreed and the teachers will work an extra three weeks to compensate the lost time,” said Kambi.

Knut Secretary-General Mudzo Nzili confirmed the same, saying Treasury logistics and preparation of payrolls were ongoing. “The Head of State is the final authority. He (Uhuru Kenyatta) indicated the teachers would be paid. We have also confirmed the same and the remaining bit is administrative, which has to be given time,” said Nzili.

New Approach

The Kenya Universities Staff Union secretary general also confirmed the Government had committed itself to pay its members by today after a meeting between Kambi, union representatives and the Ministry of Education on Friday.

Kambi said, “The Government’s new approach to resolve disputes will be to arrest problems before they become emergencies. We will only be differing with unions’ representatives in boardrooms but decisions will be made in accordance to law.”
