Nakuru, Kenya: Three lions were spotted roaming in Kimathi Primary school, Nakuru County Thursday mid-morning.

The incident has left residents of Kimathi estate  engulfed in fear.

Parents, teachers and pupils gathered at the school in shock after word went round that the lions suspected to be from Nakuru National Park had been spotted in the school compound.

Danson Mwangi, a resident of the estate said he saw them get into the school while he was taking his child to a neighbouring school.

He says that later Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) rangers found one and took it back to the park while the other two are still at large.

“Three lions were walking along the road and entered the school’s compound,” Mr Mwangi told The Standard.

Parents who had gathered outside the school compound were worried due to the danger their children were exposed to.

“I am very worried about the situation of my two children, I would like the head teacher to allow all pupils to be out of the school until the other two lions are found,” said Jane Mwangi, a parent at the school.

The head teacher Mr Jackson Anangwe, said he received a telephone call from KWS officers telling him to open the gate because they had seen lions get into the school compound.

Mr Anangwe said it was not the first time wild animals were spotted in the school. He claimed last holiday a lion was also found walking in the school compound and residents who saw it reported to KWS who came and drove it back to the park.

He called upon KWS to find a solution because the animals may harm people neighbouring the Park. “KWS should fence the Park to enclose the wild animals as they may harm people,” he noted.

Following the incident, locals have called upon KWS to ensure the park is well fenced to avoid such incidents in future.
