Kenya: Secondary school principals in Siaya County have been warned against leasing out school buses.
Governor Cornel Rasanga said no school head would be allowed to misuse buses purchased by parents to transport students going for sports, drama and other extra-curricular activities.
“I will not allow that in my county. Ask yourself, how many times does the bus take students out? Most of them just wait to be hired either to ferry bodies from mortuaries or take people to funerals,” he said.
Mr Rasanga said that instead of going for buses, the schools should focus on academic excellence and other more important projects.
“Several schools including upcoming ones that do not deserve buses struggle to purchase the vehicles for prestige, subjecting parents to unnecessary expenses,” he said.
Rasanga was speaking during an education day organised for schools sponsored by Anglican Church Maseno West Diocese in Ng’iya Girls High School, where he asked school investment committees to review the need for a school bus before embarking on a project.
He said instead of going for buses, the schools should focus on academic excellence and other more important projects. The Governor added that schools should focus on development oriented projects.
