Police are investigating an incident in which a man died while seated in his car in a traffic jam in Nairobi.

The body of the man was found on his steering at about 9pm on Monday after he had been stuck in a jam for four hours near Nyayo Stadium.

Police said the victim who works with Tetra Park industries was driving to the city centre when the incident happened.

Makadara OCPD Tom Atuti said police were called to the scene by other motorists who realised the victim’s car was not moving in spite of the traffic flow opening up.

"He was found lying dead on the steering and we are yet to know what caused his death. Other colleagues said he had left office several hours earlier," said Atuti.

Atuti added they will wait for post mortem report on Tuesday to indicate the cause of the death.

Nairobi motorists experienced one of the worst traffic jam on Monday night following heavy downpour.

Motorists who called The Standard newsroom said they had spent the night on the roads.

The Meteorological Department said the long rains would continue to next month and warned that Kenyans should be prepared for flash floods.

Deputy Director at the department Mr Peter Ambenje called for building of dams on major rivers.

Some of the victims arrived their destinations past midnight.

Nairobi traffic boss Mr Patrick Lumumba said a number of roads were flooded which slowed down traffic flow.

"The roads were flooded, some vehicles were stuck and broke down on the roads which made it impossible for the normal movement of traffic," said Lumumba.
