Education officials will start a crackdown on private schools that lack equipment and teaching facilities in Likoni sub-county.
According to Education officials attending a leaders' security meeting at the Likoni Social Hall yesterday, 1,291 of the 1,680 candidates who sat the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations in Likoni scored below D+.
Exam results
Some 233 candidates scored E, 582 had D-, 317 D plain and 159 D+. Only one candidate scored A- in the whole sub-county.
Most candidates that performed poorly sat the examinations in private schools.
Likoni sub-county has 75 private schools and 19 public ones.
Sub-county Education Director Newtone Okwatsa yesterday said he had sought help from the security office for the planned crackdown.
"Majority of private schools produced D- and E. We had 24 centres of private schools and eight public ones," said Mr Okwatsa.
Science subjects
He said analysis done on performance indicated that candidates did poorly in science subjects, with majority scoring grade E due to lack of learning equipment.
In the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education results, 1,905 candidates scored below 250 marks while 1,727 got 250 marks and above.
It also emerged during the meeting that teachers hired in private schools were Form Four leavers who were paid as low as Sh2,000 monthly.
Local leaders in attendance condemned poor performance, urging the Government to intervene.
