Journalists and media practitioners have been encouraged to diversify their content to adapt to the changes in the media sector.
Media Council of Kenya Director of Media Training and Development Victor Bwire, said that the high cost of operations in newsrooms is forcing some media houses to close down.
"Journalists need to embrace new technology, find ways to process news through podcasts using their phone and share the content on social media including YouTube, Websites, TikTok, and Facebook, among other platforms,"he said.
Speaking during the launch of the Nyeri Press club, Bwire said there is a high demand for content in the digital world, and journalists should tap into these opportunities and monetize their skills.
"There is a high demand for content in the world, but journalists should learn how to use creative skills in creating content to be consumed everywhere," Bwire said.
Bwire, who is also the Deputy CEO (MCK), lauded the formation of Nyeri Press Club, citing that it's easy to access them through a group rather than individually.
"Nyeri press club will to foster solidarity amongst journalists and offer training opportunities in the media industry," he said.
Bwire noted that the club can attract economic opportunities, including securing loans and starting investments.
"It's about time, that journalists think of long-term investments and prepare for retirement," he said.
He noted that through the group, the practitioners will be taught life-saving skills, high-return investments, and maximizing their time in media.
MCK Regional Coordinator Jackson Karanja said that club will offer journalists a platform to meet and exchange ideas about their stories.
"This is an opportunity for journalists. When digital centers are opened, the press will have a space to work on," he said.
Nyeri Deputy Governor David Kinaniri, while representing Governor Mutahi Kahiga, said that the club will foster unity and growth to the media.
He called for journalist to remain focused and hold their ambitions, assuring them his support.
"Learn to set goals in life and work towards them, and you will finally achieve them," Kinaniri said.
