Githunguri DC Fredrick Ndunga has warned of resurrection of Mungiki sect in the area.
Ndunga noted the illegal group has embarked on extorting money from business people and recruiting new members.
The DC said: “Some fellows are attempting to resurrect it but the Government will crack down and wipe them out.”
The affected areas, he said, are Karia, Ikinu and various bus stops along Kiambu-Githunguri road.
Ndunga said they have intelligence reports that the youth have support from political leaders and are reorganising themselves ahead of the General Election.
He urged matatu operators not to give the criminals room to expand by allowing them to hide in their midst.
Speaking at a public function in Githunguri town at the weekend, Ndunga warned that no matatu operator will be allowed to work without badges and licences.
“You find youth at the main bus termini and when matatus stop, they negotiate with the conductors and money changes hands but the matatu players have remained quiet for fear of reprisals,” he added.
Abducted officials
Recently, matatu operations were paralysed in Gatundu following the murder of two matatu Sacco officials.
The two were abducted and their mutilated bodies recovered weeks later, and matatu operators blamed the murders on the outlawed gang, raising fears of its return.
Ndunga also warned matatu players against breaking traffic rules, saying most matatus ferry 18 passengers instead of the mandatory 14.
“Mungiki crackdown will go hand in hand with restoring sanity in the matatu sector in our district where they are ferrying as many passengers as they get. And we warn passengers that anyone who will be found having boarded an overloaded vehicle will be prosecuted,” said the DC.
