US President Donald Trump was heckled by protesters as he met the victims of the deadly shootings in Texas and Ohio.

Some of Trump's critics say his rhetoric on immigration fuelled the shooting in El Paso, Texas, which was allegedly an anti-Mexican attack.

The President was greeted by demonstrators when he arrived in El Paso and Dayton, Ohio, to meet survivors and grieving relatives yesterday.

Some held signs reading "Trump is racist," "Love over hate" and "Send him back!"

Chanting crowds in Dayton urged Trump to 'do something', amid calls for greater gun control in the US.

The President and first lady Melania Trump avoided the press on both hospital visits and stayed out of public view.

They visited wounded victims in their hospital rooms at the University Medical Center in El Paso and Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton.

The pair also thanked medical staff and first responders for their actions, White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said.

"It was a warm and wonderful visit. Tremendous enthusiasm & even Love," Trump said on Twitter after leaving Dayton.

Trump also visited law enforcement personnel at an emergency operations center in El Paso to thank them for their response on Saturday.

A gunman killed 22 people at a Walmart store in the border city, apparently after posting an anti-immigrant manifesto online.

Another shooter killed nine people in Dayton on Sunday, before being shot dead by police.

Trump told police officers and staff: "The job you have done is incredible. I wanted to come and thank you.
