A story is told of a single woman who attended a party. At the event, she spotted a dashing man — the oft described as tall, dark and handsome — and she was flattered when he showed interest in her. It seemed to be her lucky night.

This prince charming was dressed sharply, and his cologne was the finishing touch to this perfect picture. She had met her dream man, or so she thought, until he did the unthinkable; he put his finger in his nose, rummaged for several moments, and then spent some minutes looking at whatever he had picked. Long story short, by the end of the function, none had the other’s number.

If you are in the habit of picking your nose, please stop. It is unhygienic, and unpleasant to witness.

•             Like other addicts, the first step to stop this habit is to accept that you have a problem.

•             You may need to identify what triggers the habit. If a medical condition causes your nose to itch, see a doctor.

•             It could also help if you cleaned your nose every morning and evening, to get rid of dry mucus so that you don’t get the urge to pick it.

•             If you are fond of picking your nose when bored, consider wearing gloves to help you during tempting moments. You could also wear a bandage on the finger that causes the offending habit.

•             A neater and more decent way to remove an offending object from the nose is to use a tissue or handkerchief. It would be even more polite if you blew your nose with the handkerchief, instead of picking it.

•             Try putting pepper on your nose-picking finger, and you will never pick your nose again.

•             Constantly remind yourself that this is a habit you need to stop. Consider the untold number of germs you insert in your nose. Woe unto you if you are a bank teller, conductor or shopkeeper — money is among the dirtiest objects we touch.

•             When you pick your nose, you give a negative impression — you come off as ill-mannered, childish, unhygienic and lacking etiquette. You may lose a great relationship or job opportunities.

•             Ask a close friend or your spouse to restrain you whenever they see you in the act. You could have a code through which they communicate, especially if you are in a public place.
