KCB and Kabras Sugar glide through to Dala Sevens quarterfinals

Defending champions KCB RFC and the formidable Kabras Sugar RFC have stormed into the quarterfinals of the Dala Sevens after delivering commanding performances on the opening day of the tournament at the Jomo Kenyatta Stadium, Mambo Leo.

KCB RFC, determined to defend their title, made a strong statement with two decisive victories. The bankers started their campaign by shutting out a spirited Kenyatta University side, Blak Blad, with a 24-0 win in the morning fixture.

They followed this up with a dominant 38-5 thrashing of Homeboyz, showcasing their intent to reclaim the Dala Sevens crown.

KCB RFC 7s Coach Andrew Amonde emphasized the importance of setting the tone early in the tournament.

"We need to make a statement from the word go. This is why we put the right players on the pitch, and everyone can see that this is a totally different KCB. I am convinced that as the competition progresses, we will continue beefing up and showing our true colours," Amonde remarked.

The return of key players, including Samuel Asati and Festus Shiasi, has undoubtedly bolstered KCB's lineup.

Both players demonstrated their class and impact on the opening day, although the team is still missing Vincent Onyala, who is expected to return for the Kabeberi Sevens next weekend.

Currently sitting third in the overall National Sevens Circuit standings with 32 points, KCB RFC is eager to climb higher with a strong performance in the Dala Sevens.

Captain Levy Amunga expressed his confidence in the team's ability to retain their title, especially with the return of key players from their mandatory 10-day rest following their participation in the 2024 Olympics.

"The team is stronger than before, so I believe we are well poised to retain our crown," Amunga said.

KCB's final group match against the Ngong Road-based Nondescripts will determine if they top Pool B, further setting the stage for a thrilling knockout round on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Kabras Sugar RFC, fresh off their success at the Christie Sevens and a bronze finish at the Kakamega Sevens, also made a resounding start to their Dala Sevens campaign.

The sugar men blanked Stallions Sevens 21-0 in their opening match, with Derrick Ashiundu, Erick Cantona, and William Muhanji all crossing the whitewash. Kabras then secured their place in the last eight with a solid 22-5 victory over Kisumu RFC.

Kabras Sugar headlined Group C alongside MMUST, Stallions, and hosts Kisumu RFC. Sevens Coach Felix Ayange praised his team’s disciplined performance in their opening matches. "We played well in the first match. We controlled the game and we are going to take it a game at a time," Ayange said.
