Stuck with old memorabilia and not knowing what to do with it? Take heart because time has come for you to remove them from old boxes hidden in a dark corner and bring them alive. Memorabilia represent our past achievements and experiences that not only arouse memories of days gone by but are a constant reminder of why we ought to keep working harder.
It is true we can trace our competitive nature from an early age — from trophies bagged at sporting activities, awards received for being the best, as well as family photos and posters collected. They all form part of prized collectibles. Paintings, batiks and photographs can transform your wall from a drab-looking one to an exciting centre of attraction. Photos: Martin Mukangu/Standard
Finding and choosing the best memorabilia for an empty wall is a lot of fun, especially if you are looking for rare pieces. Rare collectibles, for those interested in buying, can be a little expensive. However, uniquely framed photos and posters as well as T-shirts and caps of iconic footballers work alright, too.
Vintage feel
To fill that wall, look no further than the vicinity of your home and transform it from a drab-looking one to an exciting centre of attraction. If you are a music fanatic, for instance, hang your favourite music hangings together with pictures of your favourite musicians. Old vinyl as well as cassette players encased in beautiful holders can become your focal point on the wall.
Family photos can be framed and arranged in a balanced manner. For instance, with a vertical or potrait frame, place two horizontal landscaped photos to the right and left, depending on the side of the wall you are working on. Avoid coloured photos. Instead, go for sepia-coloured or black and white as they introduce a vintage feel.
You could also hang souvenirs from prior excursions or objects that reflect your hobbies and interests. This will help personalise your room. For football fans, the options are endless. You could liven the bedroom by pinning up jerseys of your favourite team, posters and pictures of famous players, and autographs from celebrities you have brushed shouders with.
Thematic collections
Miniature collections such as ticket stubs, helmets of your favorite rally driver, cars and/or machines also add glamour to a room. Such collections are a treasure and the most noble thing is to share them with family and friends.
