UDA demands swift action on police excesses in protests

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has called on investigating agencies to expedite investigations into police excesses during protests.

 In a statement on Wednesday, July 3, UDA Secretary General Cleophas Malalah condemned the violence and looting witnessed during the anti-government protests.

He urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) to investigate the matter thoroughly.

“We call upon the DCI and the ODPP to expedite their investigations into the violent incidents that marred the demonstrations,” Malalah said.

“We specifically urge these agencies to identify and prosecute those responsible for funding the goons who infiltrated the peaceful protests, resulting in violence and looting,” he added.

Malalah’s call comes as a report from the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) reveals that at least 39 people were killed and 361 injured during the anti-Finance Bill protests across the country.

According to KNCHR chairperson Roseline Odede, those who lost their lives were from Nairobi (17), Nakuru (3), Laikipia (1), Narok (1), Kajiado (3), Uasin Gishu (4), Kakamega (1), Kisumu (2), Kisii (1), Mombasa (3), Siaya (1), Kiambu (1), and Nandi (1).

At the same time, the commission reported 32 cases of involuntary disappearances and 627 instances of protestors being arrested.

Malalah urged the police to intensify their efforts to protect the lives and property of all citizens during such events.

 “It is imperative that law enforcement agencies ensure the safety and security of everyone, maintaining peace and order in our communities,” Malalah noted.

 The party condemned the violence against innocent citizens and the looting that took place during the demonstrations, stating that such actions undermine the spirit of peaceful protest and harm the nation.
