Night guard on the spot over Sh300K worth of stolen sound systems

A 26-year-old night guard was recently charged with the theft of radios, amplifiers, woofers, and Bluetooth devices before a Nairobi court.

According to court papers, the accused, Edwin Omongo, allegedly stole assorted music systems from six vehicles at a garage located in Garden City on the night of August 20.

Desmond Oguda Akello, the owner of the garage, stated that he received information from two of his clients that the radios were missing from their cars. Concerned, he visited the garage and questioned the security guard, who assured him that no thefts had occurred or been reported.

Akello then called the manager and supervisor, and together they inspected other vehicles in the yard. They discovered that six vehicles had their music systems removed. An inventory revealed that the affected vehicles included a Toyota Prado, Mercedes Benz, BMW, and Honda Stream.

The stolen items included several amplifiers, mid-range speakers, Android, Sony, and Kenwood Bluetooth radios, as well as a Pioneer screen, with the total value amounting to Sh300,000.

CCTV footage captured Omongo allowing a stranger into the garage around 9:30 p.m. that night. The stranger was seen leaving the garage at 5 a.m., carrying something in a bag.

Omongo did not return to work for about 10 days following the incident. On September 2, he contacted Akello, informing him that he would return to work that night. The police were notified, leading to Omongo’s arrest and subsequent arraignment in court after investigations.

Omongo has denied the charges, and the case is set for trial on May 22 of next year.
