Police recover teargas canisters, gadgets from vehicle at Wanjigi's home

Police say they recovered four teargas canisters, two Motorola gadgets, seven chargers and one mobile phone from a vehicle at businessman Jimi Wanjigi's residence in Muthaiga, Nairobi on Thursday evening.

In a statement, Acting police boss Gilbert Masengeli said, “We wish to inform the public that today, we intercepted a personal motor vehicle, Prado Model KDC 883R, at Jimi Wanjigi’s residence in Muthaiga.”

 He added that the vehicle contained the teargas canisters, gadgets, chargers and mobile phone, adding investigators are on the ground to gather more details.

Masengeli called on Wanjigi to present himself to the police for investigations.

Earlier, armed police officers surrounded Wanjigi's residence. The motive, was, however, not immediately clear.

Wanjigi posted a video on X showing police vehicles and officers at his home.

“The police have decided to raid my home,” he wrote.

 His son, Maina, criticised the raid, suggesting it was linked to their political stance.

“It’s not the first time we’ve been raided. It seems that whenever we threaten them, they decide to raid us. This is all in the spirit of political freedom. Why do you have to be victimised like this when you show an opinion against the government?” said Maina.

A senior security officer requested time to complete investigations.

The family’s lawyer, Naelso Osiemo, said a statement regarding the incident would be issued on Friday, August 9.
