African gospel music has experienced a remarkable resurgence, captivating audiences both locally and globally.

Spotify Wrapped 2024 revealed a surprising trend: gospel music has secured the ninth spot on the list of most-streamed genres in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This surge in popularity can be attributed to the powerful performances of renowned gospel choirs like Joyous Celebration and Spirit of Praise from South Africa, and 1Spirit & Theophilus Sunday from Nigeria. Their inspiring music, coupled with exceptional vocal talent, has transcended borders and garnered international acclaim.

“African Gospel music is undergoing a global resurgence, inspiring millions and reshaping the global music landscape. We're thrilled to be a platform that empowers these talented artists and choirs to share their faith and music with the world," says Phiona Okumu, Spotify's Head of Music, Sub-Saharan Africa.

Solo artists have also made significant contributions to the genre's growth. Nigerian sensations Nathaniel Bassey, Moses Bliss, and Dunsin Oyekan, along with South African powerhouse Benjamin Dube, have amassed dedicated fan bases with their soulful melodies and uplifting messages.

Female artistes like Sunmisola Agbebi, Mercy Chinwo, Xolly Mncwango, and Lebo Sekgobela have also made significant strides in the industry.

The Afro-gospel sound, a fusion of African rhythms and contemporary gospel, has taken the world by storm.

Artists like Annatoria from Zimbabwe have gained international recognition with their unique blend of genres.

16 out of the top 20 most-streamed gospel artists in Sub-Saharan Africa are African. While foreigners foreign favourites like Maverick City Music, Chandler Moore, and Cece Winans also had a spot, African artists undeniably took the lead.

This global recognition was further underscored by the inclusion of eight African artists, Nathaniel Bassey, Moses Bliss, Limoblaze, Joyous Celebration, Dunsin Oyekan, Spirit Of Praise, Sunmisola Agbebi, and Mercy Chinwo, among the top 100 most-streamed gospel artists worldwide.
