The Senate will investigate the proposed removal of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza in plenary next week.

The hearings are scheduled for Monday, August 19 and Tuesday, August 20.

The Senate Business Committee confirmed the dates after rejecting a motion to establish a special committee to handle the matter.

"The route of the special committee is abandoned, and the Senate will investigate the proposed removal from office by the impeachment of Kawira Mwangaza in plenary," said Senate Speaker Amason Kingi.

Parties involved in the case have until Saturday, August 17 at 5 p.m. to file their responses with the Clerk of the Senate.

The clerk will issue invitations for the hearings by Wednesday, August 14 and circulate documents, including the plenary hearing programme, by Sunday, August 18.

Mwangaza was impeached last week by the Meru County Assembly for the third time. Forty-nine Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted for her removal while 17 opposed the motion.

The impeachment, moved by Deputy Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya, cited gross violation of the Constitution, gross misconduct and abuse of office.

"The majority leader moved the motion at order no. 8 for the establishment of a special committee to investigate the proposed removal from office by impeachment of Kawira Mwangaza. The motion has been negatived," Kingi added.
