Dutch nationals arrested, freed in Kitui town

KITUI; KENYA: Police in Kitui Sunday arrested two foreign nationals after members of the public mistook one of them for the fugitive British terrorist Samantha Lewthwaite.

The two women were arrested as they approached a mosque in the town and questioned before being released.

Local OCPD Muchagi Kioi said they were alerted by members of the public that the two ladies were seen in the town on Saturday and an intensive man-hunt was launched.

Kioi said armed security personnel including female police detectives were dispatched to supermarkets, churches, mosques and in the estates to track them down.

The police chief said after interrogations the two were found to be harmless Dutch researchers with a local a local an international NGO, SASOL.

“We demanded for requisite documents including their passports to verify whom they were and what they doing in Kitui County. They produced the evidence and we released them after brief detention at the CID offices,” said Kioi who said police were leaving nothing to chance after the Westgate attack.

He was flanked by the County police commander Cheruto Githinji, her counterparts Julius Sunkuli (CID) and Abdullahi Aden (AP).
