Two police officers linked to the escape of a murder suspect have been arrested.

The two attached at Kiamaciri Police Station in Mwea, Kirinyaga County are said to have been on duty on Friday when the suspect went missing from the cells.

Preliminary reports indicate Phillipino Muifi, 23, a Ugandan national was arrested in Nakuru two weeks ago and was being held at the station after court allowed detectives to detain him for 14 days as they continue with investigations.

According to police, Muifi disappeared on Friday with another suspect who had been arrested over bestiality claims. The duo broke a pipe before their escape.

Muifi was being detained over the murder of his employer Rose Muthoni Kariuki in 2023 before fleeing with the deceased’s phone.

Although police have launched investigations relatives to the deceased have threatened to stage protests until the suspect is re-arrested.

The daughter of the deceased, Calorine Wangui, said she was shocked to be informed by the officer commanding station (OCS ) that the suspect accused of killing her mother in November last year had fled.

“I want justice and the suspect re-arrested. I used my own money to see the suspect brought here from Uganda, right now they have released him,” said Wangui.

Kirinyaga County Commander Andrew Naibei termed the incident as unfortunate, assuring the family of the late Kariuki that they will find justice for the murder of their kin.
