'Prophetesses’ beaten up as snake emerges from handbag

Muranga, Kenya; Tension gripped Githiga village in Kangema on Sunday, after four people claiming to be prophets were attacked by members of the public after a snake emerged from one of the bags they were carrying.

The ‘prophets’ who included two women, attracted a huge crowd as they prayed for the sick-and they held Bibles in their hands before hell broke loose after a snake was spotted finding its way out of one of the handbags.

Members of the public turned their anger at the self-proclaimed clergy, and they forced them to cut short the prayers. They hurled blows and kicks at the ‘prophets’ while others used crude weapons.

In the confusion that ensued, the male preachers escaped from the scene unnoticed, leaving behind the two women. The women received further beating from the mob, as they demanded to know the purpose of carrying a snake.

The two women were later escorted to Kangema Police Station and were later taken to hospital for treatment.

Kangema OCPD Mr Juma Machua said local administrators saved the two women from lynching by members of the public.
