The aunt of 21-year-old Evans Kiratu, who was killed during the protests last month, has been arrested. A video shows her screaming while holding a poster of her nephew as she is loaded into a police Land Cruiser.
"Mliua Mtoto Wangu Na Mnanishika!" (You killed my child and now you are arresting me!"), she screams. Evans was the second person to die when the protests started exactly a month ago. Kiratu died from injuries that were sustained after a tear gas canister fired by police, hit his groin area.
Activists Boniface Mwangi, Hussein Khalid and Shad Kiprono have also been arrested during today's protests in Nairobi.
The activists and relatives of those killed during protests were taking part in a peaceful march to honour those who died and, demand justice. The demonstration called 'Mashujaa March' was marking one month since the protests began on June 25.
The protestors including parents and relatives of those killed hoped to present a petition to the office of the president at Harambee House and then proceed to Parliament Road to lay flowers.
Mwangi recently released a statement calling out the attacks he has been facing since Maandamano started, from claims that he is being funded to lead the protests, to threats to his life as well as goons targeting his offices.
"Ile sababu unaona vijana wanatokea wengi kwa maelfu na maelfu kwa bara bara na wako no ni uchungu sana hawajalipwa. Hio unchungu ni kilio cha haki, kilo chao ni kwamba hawana kazi. Ukipata kazi unuiziwa good conduct, ukiapply good conduct hawapati, ukiapply ID unauziwa elfu moja na iko na expiry date. Katika inchi hii kuwa kijana ni hatia, it's a actually a crime to be a young person".
("The reason you are seeing all these young people coming out in their thousands on the roads is not because they have been paid. It is pain and a cry for juctice, their cry becuase they do not have work. If you find work you have to buy a certicate of good conduct, when you apply for it, you still dont get it, you apply for ID and it's being sold for Sh1000 and it has an expiry date, in this coutnry to be a young person is a crime, it's actually a crime to be a young person").
Hussein Khalid who had reposted video's of Shad Kiprono's abduction at Java, Kimathi street, was himself picked up three hours later.
In the video clips, four men in plain clothes are seen walking onto the baclony of the restaurant, surrounding Shad's table before leaving with him. Shad is then herded into a police Lands Cruiser that was waiting outside.
Shad later posted that he was taken to JKIA.
"Currently being processed at JKIA DCI, I actually did my #OccupyJKIA"
Reports indicate that Mwangi and Khalid are said to be currently being held at Central police station while Shad Kiprono was, according to his tweets on X, at JKIA DCI headquarters.
According to Sema Ukweli Kenya, Boniface Mwangi has since been transferred from Central police Station to Kamukunji Police station where lawyers have been denied access. Shad Kiprono has also been transferred to Kamukunji police station.
