Mozzart Bet Cup's three-year transformation journey on Kenyan Football

February 23, 2023, will go down in the annals of Kenyan football history as the day gaming firm Mozzart Bet defied uncertainty within football structures and injected a much-needed boost into the sport by inking a three-year sponsorship deal with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). At the time of the announcement, the domestic cup had gone nearly three years without a sponsor. Even the 2022 winners, Gor Mahia, were left empty-handed despite clinching the prestigious local title, only taking pride in a continental ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup. The sponsorship deal, worth Sh66,959,500 after three years, saw Mozzart Bet Kenya commit at least Sh20 million annually to the revamped Mozzart Bet Cup (formerly FKF Cup), reflecting the company's commitment to supporting sports and community initiatives across Kenya. "We are thrilled to work with FKF to promote football in Kenya and provide opportunities for young players to showcase their skills," said Sasa Krneta, Country Manager for Mozzart Bet Kenya. "This sponsorship aligns with our values and long-term goals of supporting local talent and grassroots football." Frank Ochieng, Mozzart Bet Kenya's Marketing Manager, added, "We are strong believers in the ability of sports to positively impact individuals and communities. This sponsorship marks a significant milestone for us, and we look forward to making a meaningful impact." The Mozzart Bet Cup not only aimed to increase the visibility of Kenyan football but also to unlock growth opportunities for players, particularly from underserved regions. Underdogs Rise and History is Made The tournament's return kicked off in Mumias, Western Kenya, with defunct Nyota FC hosting NSL side Darajani Gogo. Though the hosts lost 1-0, it marked the beginning of a historic shift. Unlike past editions, the cash incentives attached to the Mozzart Bet Cup sparked interest from remote and marginalized areas. Teams like Lions United from Samutet (Kericho), Berlin FC from Sosiot (Kericho), Kajiado FC from Maasai land, and Marula FC from Naivasha joined the fray, with the first round starting at the Round of 32. Despite the excitement, no lower-tier side progressed beyond the Round of 16, leaving heavyweights Tusker, Kakamega Homeboyz, Ulinzi Stars, and AFC Leopards to battle in the semis. Kakamega Homeboyz stunned Tusker in the final thanks to Kevin Amwayi's 73rd-minute goal, securing their first major title in 13 years. That win in 2023 marked the 53rd edition of the Cup competition and cemented Homeboyz's place in Kenyan football folklore. When the final whistle blew, tears of joy flowed freely for players who had longed for such a moment, made even sweeter by the fact that the trophy was sponsored by their own shirt partner, Mozzart Bet. Growing Pull and Wider Reach The 2024 edition was even bigger. Mozzart Bet's investment enabled FKF to expand the tournament's format to include preliminary rounds. For the first time, academy sides and grassroots clubs like Wisdom Soccer Academy (Kitale), Al Azizia, Eldoro Sports Club, Harvest of Hope, Solian FC, and Denmark FC joined in. Five months of intense football culminated in Kenya Police, under coach Salim Babu, winning their first major trophy by defeating KCB in the final and booking a historic CAF Confederation Cup slot which was their maiden appearance on the continental stage. In 2025, the third and final year of the partnership, Mozzart Bet's impact was evident as teams from previously unrepresented regions, such as Kakuma United (Turkana) and Kapenguria United (West Pokot), took part in an edition that began from a round of 64 teams. In a stunning twist, National Super League (NSL) side Nairobi United lifted the 2025 Mozzart Bet Cup, defeating Gor Mahia and bagging Sh2 million in prize money, along with a ticket to the CAF Confederation Cup. It was the second time in the competition's history that an NSL club won the title. Impact on Lives and Livelihoods The tournament's influence has gone beyond the pitch. Players such as Kevin Amwayi-who had stepped away from top-flight football after leaving Ulinzi in 2020-found new life through the Mozzart Bet Cup. After helping Kona Rangers gain NSL promotion, Amwayi returned to the spotlight with Homeboyz, scoring the winner in the 2023 final against Tusker. "We had the home advantage against Gor in the round of 16, and our form had started picking up. That confidence drove us to victory and the Cup games, where I have found minutes this season, has got me back to the top, and people are now speaking about Amwayi. I am grateful to Mozzart," Amwayi said. Other players whose Cup performances helped revive their careers include Shadrack Simiyu, Philip Simiyu, Meshack Karani, and Dancun Khameba, each earning moves to FKF Premier League clubs. "This tournament is crucial for grassroots teams," said Marafiki FC head coach James Kabuga, whose side eliminated FKF Premier League team Talanta FC. "It gives us exposure and builds players' confidence while offering fans a rare chance to watch top-tier stars." Beyond Football - The Humanitarian Touch The Mozzart Bet Cup's legacy extends to the community through its unique humanitarian cheque initiative. From the quarterfinals onward, Man of the Match winners received Sh100,000 to donate to a charity or institution of their choice. Among the past recipients were Ernest Mohammed, Isaac Omweri, Alpha Onyango, Bryton Onyona, Patrick Matasi, Kenneth Muguna, Steve Biko, Brian Rio Ochieng, Victor Omune, Kaycie Odhiambo, David Owino, Joseph Omulama, Hillary Otieno, John Otieno, Lucas Maina, and Moses Shummah. Some of the highlight humanitarian cheque donations were that of Shummah, who used his cheque to visit and support patients at Kakamega County Referral Hospital, clearing overdue bills for six patients. "It is such a big privilege for me and the entire Homeboyz team to be here," Shumah said. "I believe that what we have done today, including visiting the sick, providing them with foodstuff and also paying bills, is a blessing not just for us but also for Mozzart Bet, who are the main reason we are here." Hospital Administrator Hillary Kiverenge praised the initiative and welcomed future collaborations. "We appreciate the good gesture and efforts by the Homeboyz team and Mozzart Bet. We have so many facilities in this area but you decided to come here. We are so grateful and we hope that this is not the last time we will see you here." Never forget where you come from, so they say. Kenya Police winger David Okoth went back to his former school in Siaya county to put smiles on the current pupils and staff. The highly-rated winger used his Mozzart Bet Man of the Match Humanitarian award to buy water tanks for his former school Nyadhi Primary School as well as Kings and Queens Kindergarten Academy in Siaya. "This is my former school (Nyadhi Primary School) and I know they have challenges getting clean and safe water. I am happy that through the support of Mozzart, we have tried to bridge the gap and they now have access to clean water," Okoth said, A Legacy to Remember Three years since Mozzart Bet stepped into Kenyan football, the Mozzart Bet Cup has rewritten narratives, empowered players, uplifted communities, and rekindled national interest in local football. With new teams, new winners, and new hopes, the competition has achieved what many could only dream of-and leaves behind a legacy that promises to inspire for years to come.
