Who is Alice Shiundu?
I am a widow, a gospel artist, an informal businesswoman and a humble minister serving at Full Gospel Churches of Kenya in Malaba.
Tell us about your music journey.
My music journey began 10 years ago when I discovered my talent while singing in the church choir and serving in the praise and worship team. I officially ventured into the music industry in 2015 when I recorded my first song, Umenipa Amani. This song marked a major breakthrough for me as it was widely celebrated for its moving message. My second album further cemented my place in the gospel music industry. So far, I have recorded 40 songs, with Walinzi Wamelala, a collaboration with Tanzanian gospel star Rose Muhando, being my best-performing track.
Which is the most memorable day in your music career?
The most unforgettable day of my career is December 8, 2024, at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi. I was celebrated by many fans as I received the Tukuza Award for Western Region, 2024. I was overwhelmed with joy and deeply grateful to God for lifting me and taking away my shame.
After this event, what is your next plan?
I am trusting God to guide me toward winning a Groove Award. I am actively working towards this goal.
Based on your experience, what is your observation of Kenyan gospel artists?
Many Kenyan gospel artists struggle with consistency in their work due to self-interest. Some shift to secular music because they prioritise financial gain over glorifying God. When gospel music doesn’t seem profitable, they abandon their calling. Additionally, there’s too much competition among gospel artists, and many are more focused on business ventures than on serving God. Music producers and copyright bodies are often riddled with corruption instead of working diligently to support gospel ministers.
Your story is one of grass to grace. Could you share more about it?
Yes, my life has been defined by poverty since childhood. I am also a divorcee. My husband of many years filed for divorce and left me with six children to fend for on my own. With no means of survival, I was forced to beg to provide for my children. My children endured extreme poverty, a life I would never wish to relive, not even in memory.
How has your life changed?
God has blessed me abundantly, and He continues to do so. I am a transformed person, living a much better life now. God has blessed me with 11 grandchildren. I will always thank God for His blessings.
