Businessman Jimi Wanjigi detained, to be presented in court

Businessman Jimmy Wanjigi has been detained at the Kamukunji police station, shortly after appearing before the Regional Investigation Officer at the Nairobi area police station.

Wanjigi had been summoned in connection with a vehicle found parked outside his gate on August 8, 2024, where the police found teargas canisters, mobile phones, and assorted charges among other things.

Wanjigi has since denied ownership of the vehicle and its contents.

According to his lawyer, John Khaminwa, the detention of Wanjigi in custody is despicable and a failure to obey court orders by the police.

Khaminwa, who accompanied Wanjigi to honour the summons, said that his client had obtained a court order barring the police from detaining, arresting, or restraining the liberty and freedom of movement of Wanjigi.

He said that the summons issued to his client, commanding him to appear before the investigation officer was contemptuous for it seeks to restrain the liberty and freedom of movement of his client.

"What is happening now is despicable. That is not the way justice should be administered at all. Things are happening which used to happen during Moi administration, which I thought as a country we have now got over," said Khaminwa.

Khaminwa explained that while at the office of the senior investigating officer, where they had been cleared and were about to leave the office, another senior officer entered the office and mentioned guns at Wanjigi's home.

Shortly thereafter, one senior investigator came and informed them that they are taking Wanjigi to court tomorrow (Tuesday) and would put him in custody.
