Kebs lists peanut butter brands unfit for human consumption

NAIROBI, KENYA: The Kenya Bureau of Standards has directed Jetlak Foods to recall Nuteez brand in the market with immediate effect.

In a letter, Kebs said it has also suspended the permit to Jetlak Foods that allows it to use standardization mark for its Nuteez brand.

The standards body said it undertook inspection of Jetlak Foods and as a cautionary measure, seized all the peanut butter at the factory. Samples were taken and analysis done. “Tests undertaken on the samples have confirmed that the level of aflatoxin is 25.13 parts per billion, which is higher than the maximum limit allowed by the standard, “stated acting Managing Director, Nguyo Bernard.

The Kenya Standard peanut butter specification states that the maximum total aflatoxin content, is 15 parts per billion (ppb).

In the last 7 months, Kebs say it has been undertaking market surveillance of peanut butter. 54 samples of peanut butter have been collected from various points of sale and manufacturers from July 1. Other peanut butter brands by Truclover and Mother Nature;s product were tested and noted to have exceeded the maximum limit for aflatoxins and have had their permit suspended. These are Triclover 9Brand; Clovers Nuts Smooth level of aflatoxin is 36.44 ppb), Triclover (Brand: Cloves Nuts Chocolate level of aflatoxin is 44.25ppb), Mother nature;s product (Brand: Mother nature;s level of aflatoxin is 27.26ppb.
