PNU mulls over new party as 2012 beckons

By Mutinda Mwanzia

PNU affiliates are in a two-day retreat to hammer out a new alliance ahead of 2012 elections.

The two-day retreat, which kicks off today, has, however, been dogged by rifts after some parties, including Kanu and DP, pulled out.

The Naivasha forum brings together political heavy weights in the PNU coalition, including Vice-President Kalonzo Musyoka, ministers George Saitoti, Mutula Kilonzo, and Kiraitu Murungi, among others.

More than 70 MPs and party representatives from ODM-Kenya, Safina, Ford-Kenya, New Ford-Kenya, Sisi Kwa Sisi, Mazingira, Shirikisho, Ford-People and Kadu Asili will attend.

Strong Coalition

Mr Mutula said they would discuss issues affecting the coalition wing and how to strengthen it ahead of 2012.

"But if we end up talking in one voice the issue of a new party would also be welcome," he said.

PNU Executive Director Jasper Nyamboga said apart from MPs, others invited for the retreat include officials of parties that form the PNU coalition.

He said fears the affiliates would be asked to disband in favour of a new political union were unfounded.

Deputy Executive Director at the PNU Secretariat Brigadier (Rtd) Henry Rop said the issue of a new political outfit was a reality and would be subject of debate.

"We have an umbrella organisation known as the Progressive People’s Union, which we intend to unveil after the retreat," he said.
