Nairobi City County was crowned the best team at the just-concluded 91st edition of the annual Kenya Music Festival in Kakamega County.

The announcement was made on the lawns of Kakamega State Lodge on Friday evening, when First Lady Margaret Kenyatta hosted the top performers of the fete.

"We are so happy to retain this trophy as it is an indication of good work by students and teachers as well as support from parents and the Government," said Peter Koigi, the Nairobi secretary who received the trophy from Ms Kenyatta.

The county was buoyed by good performances from Pangani Girls, State House Girls, Lenana School, Upper Hill School, Nairobi School, Starehe Boys Centre, Kariobangi Girls School, Makini, University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University and Technical University of Kenya among others.

Additional points came from individual talent like Aga Khan High School's Lisa Tracy Lyanga, who won the Soprano, Alto and Operatic classes.

Role of music

Consolata Primary School's Shirleen Obara received a standing ovation when she played Sardas composed by Italian maestro Vittorio Monti. Her unparalleled violin skills won the admiration of everyone present.

Speaking at the State Concert, the First Lady emphasised that the Government recognised the important role music and elocution played in promoting a culture of tolerance, inclusiveness and respect for all the diverse cultures of Kenya. She expressed delight at the amount of talent exhibited at the 91st edition of the Kenya Music Festival.

"Indeed, in many instances, participation in this festival has turned out to be a success story for many young aspiring artists and celebrated artists in Kenya," she said.

Ms Kenyatta also noted the new bonds of friendship from students' participation in the fete.
