China Global Television Network- Africa (CGTN-Africa) is set to enhance its resources significantly to broaden its coverage across the continent, ensuring comprehensive reporting from all five African regions.

This initiative aims to amplify African perspectives and strengthen Sino-African relations, according to Cao Ri, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of CGTN and Deputy Director of the English Center.

At a press conference in Beijing, Mr Cao emphasized the network's commitment to delivering "a balanced and comprehensive view of Africa."

He was joined by senior CGTN-Africa executives, including Shen Xiaomeng, Deputy Director of the Planning Department; Li Bin, Deputy Director of the Cultural Programs Department; Liao Liang, Deputy Director of the TV News Editing Department; Zhang Jingwen, Deputy Director of the New Media Editing Department; Guan Xin, Chief Editor of the Financial Programs Department; Xi Jia, Chief Editor of the Interview Department; Zhang He, Deputy Producer of the International Liaison Group; and Ren Yan, Chief Editor of the Exchange and Commentary Department.

Mr Cao said CGTN-Africa which was established in 2012 as CCTV-Africa and rebranded in 2016, plays a crucial role in fostering mutual understanding between China and Africa.

Management highlighted that the network has successfully elevated previously underreported economic and investment stories from the continent, providing a platform for diverse viewpoints from the continent.

He highlighted the challenges facing traditional television channels in an evolving landscape. He pointed out that new technology is creating significant obstacles, necessitating an expansion of platforms beyond traditional media.

With the rise of social media, he observed that anyone can now act as a reporter or journalist, complicating the media landscape further.

Additionally, advancements in artificial intelligence raise questions about the authenticity of content and production methods. “That’s what we’ve been trying to catch up with for the last couple of years,” he said.

With its operational hub in Nairobi, CGTN-Africa aims to reshape China's global image while empowering African voices in the international media landscape, Mr Cao said.

The increased investment comes as China seeks broader economic engagement with Africa.
