In a bold move set to revolutionize Nairobi's culinary scene, EatOut and Beans is How are launching the #BeansOnTheMenu initiative for the upcoming Nairobi Burger Week.
This collaboration will see popular restaurants incorporating bean-based dishes into their menus, promoting health and sustainability while addressing the historical underrepresentation of beans in Kenyan dining establishments.
Despite being a superfood, beans have traditionally been absent from top restaurants in Kenya. Often seen as a staple best suited for home cooking, bean dishes have rarely featured in high-end menus.
The #BeansOnTheMenu campaign aims to change this narrative by impressing diners with creative and sophisticated bean dish creations. "Beans are a climate-smart powerhouse of nutrition, but they need a rebrand," says Kristin Gutekunst, Campaign Director at Beans is How.
"By incorporating them into popular dishes like burgers and teaming up with top chefs and social media influencers across the country, we can get people excited about this humble yet amazing food group."
The timing couldn't be better; people are increasingly conscious of healthier, sustainable food choices. Beans are rich in protein, fibre, and essential vitamins and minerals, making them a vital part of any diet. Additionally, beans benefit the environment, requiring less water and having a much lower carbon footprint than many other protein sources.
"We are proud to team up with Beans is How to bring #BeansOnTheMenu during Nairobi Burger Week. This partnership celebrates culinary creativity from our chefs while nudging our community toward healthier and more sustainable food choices," says Mikul Shah, Director of EatOut.
Nairobi Burger Week will feature various creations, including burgers with beans and bean-based gourmet dishes. According to Chef Pischler of Black Aprons, "Beans are simple ingredients yet powerful, capable of transforming any dish with their rich flavours and nutritional value.
This collaboration allows us to elevate timeless recipes with finesse and depth."
In addition to the food, the campaign includes educational features such as cooking demonstrations and informational materials targeting chefs and consumers to increase awareness about beans and encourage their wider integration into everyday cooking.
From August 22 through September 1, 2024, experience Nairobi Burger Week's #BeansOnTheMenu with bean-based burger specials, chef demos, social media contests, and more at participating restaurants across Nairobi.
