Kivutha Kibwana retires from elective politics

Former Makueni Governor Professor Kivutha Kibwana has announced his exit from active politics.

Speaking on Saturday at Kikumini in Kibwezi West during the retirement party for Father Pius Kyule, Kibwana said the time had come for him to retire from active politics and be an adviser to young politicians.

"When it comes to active politics where people go to seek votes, I want to announce that I have retired in that area. I will no longer be seeking any elective seat," Kibwana said.

He however said he was open to playing an advisory role for the Kenya Kwanza government should he be called to do so.

"I decamped from Azimio and joined the president's side. I am open to helping the government in whatever capacity," he said.

The former governor noted that part of his duties in retirement will be to unite the Kamba community while keeping watch on elected leaders in Makueni county so they to serve the wananchi well.

After serving his two terms as governor from 2013 to 2022, Kibwana set his eyes on the senatorial seat which he lost badly to Daniel Maanzo of the Wiper party.

He garnered 59,034 votes against Maanzo's 177, 273.

His first term as governor was, however, tumultuous prompting him to push for the dissolution of the county government following irreconcilable differences with the then members of the county Assembly.

The law professor also served as MP for Makueni Constituency between 2002 and 2007 and also served as an advisor to a minister for lands in the Kibaki administration.

Prof Kibwana was also one of the prime movers in the crusade that gave Kenya a new constitution in 2010 earning respect nationally and internationally.
