Aden Duale says Kenya Kwanza has majority in Parliament

Garissa Township MP-elect Aden Duale has accused Azimio la Umoja One Kenya of misleading Kenyans about their numbers in Parliament after the just concluded General Election.

He said the statement by Azimio during a meeting at Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC), Nairobi, on August 17 that they were a majority coalition was untrue.

"Certainly this is a misrepresentation, twisting figures perhaps in an attempt to hype your supporters and create false hope can never be facts," he said.

The MP-elect said it was unfortunate that Azimio presidential running mate Martha Karua publicly stated that the coalition had 180 MPs.

He noted that the National Assembly has 349 MPs out of which 12 are nominated members based on respective party strength in the House.

Duale said elections for Rongai, Pokot South, Kacheliba and Kitui Rural constituencies were postponed and, therefore, the National Assembly was looking at 330 positions.

"The Kenya Kwanza coalition has over 160 members to the National Assembly and still counting. There are 12 independent members so far, most of whom are aligned to Kenya Kwanza," he said.

Yesterday, eight independent MPs attended the inaugural Kenya Kwanza parliamentary group meeting where President-elect William Ruto announced that they would be backing his administration.

Duale said Kenya Kwanza is also expected to take the largest share of the 12 nominated slots.

"The Azimio coalition party has just around 150 members to the National Assembly and that makes Kenya Kwanza the majority," he said.

In the Senate, Duale said Kenya Kwanza has 24 senators while Azimio has 22 and one as an independent out of the membership of 47.

"From the foregoing, the facts are Kenya Kwanza has the majority in both the National Assembly and the Senate," he said.
