ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna and ODM Kileleshwa Ward MCA candidate Robert Alai faced off during an Azimio la Umoja rally in Nairobi.
Sifuna, who is contesting the Nairobi Senate seat and Alai had accompanied Azimio presidential candidate Raila Odinga and his running mate Martha Karua on a tour of eight constituencies in Nairobi yesterday.
The two leaders had a physical confrontation before they were separated as Martha Karua was speaking at Gatina area in Dagoretti North constituency, prompting their supporters to scamper for safety even as the Azimio running mate called for calm.
“I am calling for order in this meeting, let everyone listen to the agenda our presidential candidate Raila Odinga is planning to do for Kenyans if elected as the next President in three weeks,’’ said Karua.
In video footage and photos in possession of The Sunday Standard, Alai is seen climbing a vehicle in which Sifuna was standing with other Azimio leaders before confronting him physically forcing the ODM secretary general to defend himself against the attack.
Alai is said to have been unhappy for not being given a chance to speak at various stops, after which he was pushed away with some supporters chanting ‘Alai must go’ as he returned to his vehicle.
Raila and other leaders ignored the brawl and went on with the meeting before proceeding to other areas in Nairobi where they were holding their first day of two days campaign tour that is intended to cover the entire county.
Sifuna and Alai did not respond to our calls to explain the physical confrontation in public.
