A 15-year-old orphan in Homa Bay County has not joined Form One for lack of school fees.
Juliet Achieng’, who got 383 marks in the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations at Agoro Sare Primary School in Rachuonyo South, lost her mother Jackline Atieno in 2011 when she was only four.
Achieng’ then lived with her grandmother Dorcas Adhiambo at Kokal Kambero, but who also died in January.
She now lives with her mother’s cousin Ms Roseline Orondo.
The minor got a chance to join Moi Nyabohanse Girls Secondary School in Migori County, where she is required to pay Sh45,000 per year.
“When results came, I was full of joy because I had passed. But I have no clue where the fees will come from,” says Achieng’.
She has been doing menial jobs, including weeding crops in people’s farms, but this has not helped. “The money I get in one week is too little to make a significant fraction of the fees. I need help,” Achieng’ said.
The girl appealed to well-wishers to help her get school fees to enable her achieve her dream. “I want to become a doctor,” she said.
Ms Orondo said of the girl: “I am accommodating her as a distant relative, but I am also financially challenged. I appeal to well-wishers to help her because she has no mother or father,” Orondo said.
