Residents of Kararitiri village in Embu East Sub-county lynched four people suspected to be robbers on Monday morning.
The four were cornered by the angry mob that responded to a distress call in an attempted robbery.
Area assistant chief veronica Karimi said she received a call at around 3:30am informing her of a robbery in the area prompting the administrator immediately informed Mbui Njeru Police station.
"By the time police came, residents had responded in their thousands and had arrested two suspects who were immediately lynched, while the other two were flushed out from their hide out at around 6AM in the morning," said Karimi.
She added that the thugs came in a group of 10 and gained entry into Alex Njeru's homestead by cutting the roof and windows of his house.
Alex Njeru, a tea director at one of tea factories in Embu, was in the house with his wife at the time and raised alarm that attracted residents in their numbers.
"We believe in unity and that's why the residents came out in their numbers though it was unfortunate they took the law into their hands. I appeal to them to let the law take Its course," added Karimi.
The thugs are said to have been armed with crude weapons and explosives which they used to scare away residents of the area.
Residents have vowed to hunt the remaining six suspected robbers from their hide outs. The six suspects who escaped are still at large.
