VIDEO: Raila discharged from hospital

ODM leader Raila Odinga has been discharged from hospital and back to his Karen home.

Raila posted a video on Twitter exercising, saying he is happy to be back.

Raila tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday, telling Kenyans the virus is real and urged them to observe all the stipulated measures. 

“This evening, I received a briefing from the doctors who have conducted numerous and complicated tests on me for the last two days... While the tests were several, one important result, which I have authorized the doctors to make public is that I have been found to have been exposed to Covid-19,” he wrote.

But in the video, Raila said he is feeling “wonderful” after having been admitted at Nairobi Hospital after he complained of fatigue.

Raila’s personal doctor Oluoch Olunya, in a statement, said he checked himself in for a routine check-up.

Family and staff close to Raila tested negative for Covid-19.

Sources confirmed that a number of employees at Raila’s home and Capitol Hill office, as well as members of his family, have so far been tested.

The former premier spent four days in the hospital where he was monitored.

Raila was first taken ill on Tuesday when he complained of fatigue before doctors recommended that he undergoes a series of tests.

Earlier, Raila had thanked Kenyans for their overwhelming support, saying he was recuperating well.

“Wakenya wenzangu, Thank you for the overwhelming messages of goodwill. I’m feeling much, much, better now and following doctors’ orders. Asanteni!” he tweeted. 

Raila on Sunday promised to maintain social distance, adding that he was happy to be out of hospital, which he said felt like being in prison.

Earlier, Dr Olunya, a consultant neurosurgeon, said “Raila needed to have some check-up. They were carried out successfully. He is still undergoing further investigations with a team of doctors and has been advised to take a rest.”

He added: “We are continuing to monitor his condition and no doubt he will be able to address the country in due course. He is in good spirits.”

Raila’s last public engagement was on Saturday when he hosted a delegation from Narok County at his Karen home.

He had returned from a tour of the Coast where he pitched camp for nearly four days promoting the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) agenda.

Some of the people who accompanied Raila to the Coast include former Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero, Suna East MP Junet Mohamed and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.

Raila began the tour in Taita Taveta County where he landed at the Taita Hills and Salt Lick Lodges airstrip and was received by Governor Granton Samboja, ODM MPs Jones Mlolwa (Voi) and Andrew Mwadime (Mwatate) as well as a number of local MCAs and party officials.

The ODM leader paid a courtesy call on the governor at his office last Tuesday morning before inspecting the ongoing construction of the new Mwatate modern market and an isolation centre at the Mwatate Sub-County Hospital, before addressing a political rally in the town.

He later addressed residents of Mbololo location before heading to Voi town for a rally.

Owino, who was with Raila for the entire trip, said he had contracted Covid-19 on December 1 last year and recovered from the disease.
