The Government has beefed up security within and outside Gusii Stadium ahead of the former Cabinet Minister Simeon Nyachae's funeral ceremony.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM party leader Raila Odinga are expected to attend the funeral ceremony.

Deputy President William Ruto and his political allies from the region are also likely to attend the ceremony.

As of Sunday morning, several uniformed and civilian police officers including those from the General Service Unit (GSU) had been deployed to Kisii town and at Nyachae's rural home at Nyosia.

General Service officers from as far as Homabay County have been deployed to Kisii town.

Earlier, reports indicated that some youths were regrouping to boo specific speakers during the ceremony at the stadium.

The reports led to the arrest of former Kisii Town Mayor Samuel Omwando alongside other unknown number youths. Those arrested spent Sunday night at Kisii police station though it is not clear the offences they had committed.

Kisii County Police Commander Jebel Munene could not confirm or deny the arrests.

"This is a presidential function. Nobody will be allowed to cause chaos," he said.

During the 2020 Mashujaa Day National Celebrations held at Gusii Stadium, Omwando was again arrested and was forced to spend three days behind bars.

He had been arrested alongside seven other individuals including a Chief and some members of the community policing.

Mourners started arriving at the stadium as early as 5am. All those accessing the stadium have been forced to undergo frisking.

Nyachae died on February 1 at the Nairobi Hospital. His body was flown to Kisii on Sunday morning where a brief church service was held at his rural home.
