A State agency has warned members of the public to be wary of rising cyber threats as more businesses go online in the wake of Covid-19.
The ICT Authority advised those looking to shop online to first check the validity of e-commerce providers and their products with the agency.
Chief Executive Katherine Getao said security is key for buyers in the era of cyber threats hence need for continued alertness. “For one to trust a brand, they look at the utility of the product for their needs, its safety and security, and its ability to maintain a relationship with the client through reliability and good reputation,” she said.
She spoke in Nairobi yesterday when she participated in a virtual cybersecurity forum that brought together over 300 participants from across Africa that was organised by consultancy firm KPMG.
In her presentation, she addressed the issue of digital trust and regulation of data privacy. Getao said during the current era of teleconferences, there are emerging issues like the reliability of the connections, eavesdropping and display of offensive content.
She encouraged international vendors to build balanced and mutually respectful relationships with African clients, saying Africa is a strong digital marketplace. She said the ICT Authority continually addresses emerging issues in cybersecurity.
Meanwhile, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned of an increase in reported cases of offences against children during online learning following the closure of schools.
“In four such reported cases, the predators sent children messages in their inboxes complimenting their looks then after gaining their trust, went ahead to ask them for their nude images among other despicable acts,” said DCI.
