My daughter is okay, Lady Maureen's mother says

The mother of Ohangla hitmaker Maureen Achieng (pictured) who is popularly known as Lady Maureen has told off Kenyans peddling lies about the health of her daughter.

Margaret Akinyi said that her daughter was recuperating at her home in Migori after undergoing treatment and in a stable condition.

She urged Kenyans to pray for her daughter who has been struggling with an illness that had halted her musical career.

"My daughter is sick but she is in a stable condition and is recovering at home. The world should know that. Although my daughter is sick, she is okay," said Akinyi.

The mother claimed that she had received several calls from people inquiring about the health status of the singer.

"As a mother, I have been praying for her recovery and I am optimistic that she will recover soon and restart her musical career," she said.

Early this year, several artists including Akothe started a campaign to offset her hospital bills and build her a house too.

Since 2018, the vibrant singer has not known peace and has struggled with sickness and has been in and out of hospitals.

Early this year, Lady Maureen was admitted at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital after being transferred from a hospital in Migori. She was discharged on February 20.

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Peter Okoth confirmed then that the singer was discharged because she “was responding well to medication and was getting stable.”

After being discharged, Lady Maureen was stuck in the hospital for five days due to unresolved family dispute with her mother.

According to family members, efforts to reconcile the singer and her mother failed and she does not want to be probed on the matter.

The musician’s health started deteriorating two years ago. She sought help from various hospitals, including Pastor Machage Memorial Hospital in Migori and now Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Two months prior to her illness, she was arrested and jailed for nine days, together with 15 band members in Mwanza, Tanzania for allegedly working in that country without permits. The musician said it was a ploy to ruin her reputation.

Last year, before falling out with her daughter, Maureen’s mum had accused the musician’s friends of abandoning her in sickness.

“The hospital bills are high. It is frustrating that I have been left alone with my daughter in the hospital. Where are those big names she was mingling in Nairobi in her heydays?” she wondered.

The family has set up a pay bill number to help raise money to cater for her medical and personal needs.

On Tuesday, however, the mother urged Kenyans to pray for her daughter's recovery so that she can start entertaining her fans again.
