15 arrested in City estate partying past curfew hours

Police officers on Saturday night raided a house in Komarock Estate and arrested 15 people partying past curfew hours after President Uhuru Kenyatta’s speech on curfew and lockdown restrictions.

The group are reported to have prepared to host a party in the house after they thought Uhuru will relax the restrictions.

The 15 men and women reportedly gathered and bought drinks before Uhuru's speech, which many anticipated would lift the curfew and ban on movement which had been put in place to contain the spread of Covid-19.

But the group is said to have partied past the curfew hours and were found smoking bhang besides flouting the social distance rule.

The group were heard trying to plead with the officers who raided their backyard in a video that was shared online.

Some of them dismissed as false reports by police that they were smoking weed and drinking past curfew hours.

“I was met on my way going to the house by the officers and they arrested me,” one of them claimed.

The 15 have been booked at Kayole Police Station and will be arraigned next week to face various charges.

Most Kenyans were left disappointed after President Uhuru instead extended the curfew and restriction for another 30 days, saying if removed, the virus will ravage the country.

Uhuru said he is aware of what most Kenyans feel and wanted, but added that removing the restrictions as Kenyans want would lead to loss of lives in the long run.

“This is not about freedom, but a matter of lives. I saw you people send to me memes, but if we open it, our people will die,” he said.
