Nairobi governor Mike Sonko

Nairobi governor Mike Sonko’s move to include alcohol in his Covid-19 relief package has caught the attention of twitter users in the US. Featured in the New York post over his latest donation of food stuffs and alcohol, New Yorkers seem to have fallen in love with the governor.

On April 14, the governor was captured on video quoting the World Health Organization as a source on his claims that alcohol kills Coronavirus disease.

“From the research which has been conducted by World Health Organization and other health organizations, alcohol plays a big role in killing the coronavirus and any sort of virus...” said the governor.

However, experts have dismissed Governor Sonko’s claims.
In a tweet, Dr. Githinji Gitahi, the CEO of Amref Health Africa, completely condemned the the governor’s acts.
“Please completely ignore clowning of a major global pandemic taking lives & putting extreme pressure on households,” he wrote. “Dump this the way you would dump your used #COVID19 #mask — never to be recovered! @MOH_Kenya needs to condemn this as this is not an ordinary citizen!”

According to the World Health Organization, Consuming alcohol will not destroy the virus, and its consumption is likely to increase the health risks if a person becomes infected with the virus.

“Consumption of alcohol will not kill the virus in the inhaled air, it will not disinfect your mouth and throat and it will not give you any kind of protection against COVID-19.” States WHO in a document termed Alcohol and COVID-19 what you need to know.

According to CheckAlc.com an online alcohol tester a bottle of Hennessy contains 40% alcohol which when used as a sanitizer becomes ineffective.

Approved sanitizers need to contain at least 60- 95% alcohol content as per The Center for Disease control and prevention guidelines.
