Muturi restrict access to Parliament

Aides accompanying leaders and State officials will not be allowed into parliament grounds, Speaker Justin Muturi has said.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Mr Muturi said the directive has been necessitated by security lapses in parliament.

He blamed the lapses on the many hangers-on who follow MPs and idle along parliament’s corridors and restaurants.

Muturi told governors, who he observed like displaying their wealth and power by tagging along a host of bodyguards, that parliament has enough security and their bodyguards are not needed.

MPs who host delegations from their constituencies in parliament’s restaurants have also been told that they can only host two visitors at a time.

“The concerns observed include increased human traffic,” Muturi said.

“There has been an alarming number of visitors hanging around Parliament.”

He said sometimes there are more visitors in the restaurants than parliamentarians.

Muturi further directed that no vehicle should be left at the basement parking lot for unreasonably long periods of time. He warned that such vehicles will be towed away.

He directed officials responsible for security to ensure that the process of vetting staff and lawmakers while issuing them with car passes is enhanced.
