Landslides displace over 12 families in Baringo

Landslides have hit part of Baringo County.

Landslides have displaced 12 families and destroyed property in Baringo Central and North constituencies following heavy downpour.

Saimo Kipsaraman MCA John Aengwo urged residents in affected areas to move to safer grounds to avert a tragedy.

“Around 12 families have been displaced. I visited the area and asked them to move to safer grounds. We thank God no life has been lost," Mr Aengwo said.

The affected areas include Boin and Kasisit villages and parts of Timboiywo location. A section of the road to Kabarnet town through Tenges has been rendered impassable after it was covered by rocks and mud.

The MCA advised locals in Sacho, Tenges, Sirwo, Kapropita, Talai and Sumeiyon to be on the look out for mudslides, cracks on walls and floors and sunken road beds. He called on the County Disaster Management Department to intervene and help the families.

At the same time, Water Resource Management Authority has warned residents living within the lower Perkera to move to higher grounds following rise in water levels of River Perkera in Marigat.

“The levels are now at flood alert, move to higher grounds, comply for your safety,” read the alert in part. In 2012 eight villages in Kabasis and nine villages in Timboiywo in Sacho Division experienced mudslide. 

According to Kenya Red Cross Society, boys aged 12 and 15 died in the incident, seven people sustained injuries, 42 houses collapsed and 46 families moved to camps.
