Man chops off sister-in-law's palm in Kisii, flees

A 30-year-old mother of two identified as Eunice Moraa is recuperating at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital after her brother-in-law chopped off her palm.

The victim claims her brother has been fighting her over the family land at Sengera area Bomachoge Chache.

Joshua Ogaro, the said suspect is still at large even as stakeholders call for civic education to curb the increasing number of Gender-Based Violence cases in the County.

According to the victim, her brother-in-law was against her tilling a section of the land that is alleged to have been under contention.

"He has been beating me every time I visit the farm. I was cutting nappier grass when he approached me with a machete. Nobody was at home when he committed the crime," says Moraa.

Kisii Woman Representative Janet Ongera visited the victim at her hospital bed and called for the immediate arrest of the suspect.

"These cases have become a menace in our community. This is a call to our leaders to come out and speak against these vices," she said.

According to Ms Ongera, her office in collaboration with the County Government will soon open a rescue centre where GBV victims will be housed.

"The police and the County Commissioner must up their game and ensure that perpetrators of such crimes are arrested and charged. A number of the perpetrators are walking freely in the community," she added.

KTRH Chief Executive Officer Dr Enock Ondari says the hospital receives more than 200 GBV cases every month. "We have a holding room at the hospital where we conduct guidance and counselling for the victims."
